A Clinical Study of Characteristics of Common Duct Stones

Abstract
This is a study of clinical characteristics of 54 cases of common duct stones, which were treated at surgical department of B.N.U.H. during 4-year periods from March 1971 to February 1975. The results were summarized as follows.
1. Among 54 cases of common duct stones, primary stones were 32 cases (59.26%), secondary stones were 18 cases (33..33%) and combined stones were 4 cases (7.41%).
2. Female outnumbered male by the ratio of 1.25 L Primary and secondary stones were prevalent in female and combined stones were prevalent in male.
3. Over three fourth of these cases -were 40~60years of age and the highest incidence was 5th decade.
4. Among 32 cases of primary stones, 20 cases (62.5%) were single stone, and fourteen of 18 cases (77.8%) of secondary stones were multiple stones.
5. Right upper quadrant abdominal pain was predominant in all cases but jaundice and fever with chillness were more prevalent in primary stones than secondary stones.
6 There was a relationship between the size of common duct and the type of stone present. The wider of diameter of the common duct, the more likely the presence of primary stone.
7. In the relation between the number of common duct explorations and the type of stone present, the more times of explorations, the higher presence of primary stones.
8. The stenosis of papilla was more frequent in primary stones than secondary stones.
